What is Reiki?

Updated: Dec 15, 2021

One of my favourite activities for experiencing more peace and calm and to support my wellbeing and aiding healing, is the practice of Reiki.

First developed by a Japanese therapist called Matiji Kawakami in 1914, Reiki's purpose is to improve health and wellbeing through consciously reconnecting to Rei - spiritual, ki - energy.

This energy can be used to develop inner strength and resilience, clear out old wounds (spiritual, mental and physical), improve physical and mental health, increase connection to ourselves, increase connection to the world around us, address life issues and experience more happiness and joy!

It is a powerful way to experience ourselves more fully, so that we may life a life that is in alignment with our soul's purpose.

How does Reiki work?

Most people know about Reiki through the practice of hands on healing. In this instance the person receiving the healing might sit or lie on a comfortable bed, whilst the practitioner lays their hands on or close to their body. The recipient then draws the energy they need to facilitate healing, harmony and balance.

A Reiki Treatment is very calming and relaxing

The process is very gentle and relaxing and often causes the recipient to doze off into a deep healing state.

Afterwards the recipient may feel different; such as lighter, more comfortable, more peaceful, with a quieter head and a clearer perspective, which can last well after the treatment, if not permanently.

When to use Reiki

Those drawn to Reiki often do so because they have some innate understanding of its benefits, or because they have some kind of longstanding issue that medicine or therapy has not been able to help.

Examples of my own success stories with Reiki are:

  • the reduction of fatigue and muscle pain,

  • help with relationship issues and healing of old relationship issues,

  • improvement in clarity and mental function,

  • a better understanding of who I am and what I am passionate about,

  • a deeper sense of connection and belonging,

  • greater intuition and sensitivity,

  • the confidence to be myself and say what I need.

Other success stories through the people I have treated are:

  • Reduction in stress and anxiety

  • Improved resilience

  • Better sleep

  • Pain management and relief

  • Release of physical and mental trauma

  • A deeper understanding of life and interconnectedness.

Through Reiki some individuals have been able to make dramatic life improvements, whilst others have found a way to manage ongoing symptoms and reduce the impact of stress, improving their quality of life.

How to work with Reiki

The easiest way to work with Reiki is to tune into its existence and be guided by it.

When you learn Reiki, a teacher will teach you how to consciously experience spiritual energy, so that you can develop a relationship to and with it. This might include:

  • Meditation practices to let go of the chatter of the mind

  • Guiding principles to live consciously (the Gokkai / 5 Reiki Precepts)

  • Hands on healing to promote health and wellbeing

  • Symbols and chanting practices

  • To give/receive a spiritual blessing, known as a reiju.

Whether it is receiving Reiki or learning Reiki, I have always found it to be a fun and uplifting experience.

Once learnt, the knowledge can be applied to our friends, families, workplaces, communities, the environment (including our homes), our pets and even our houseplants!

Who is Reiki for?

Reiki is already everywhere, so when we become aware of the spiritual energy already present we are being one with Reiki. This means it is safe to do anytime, anywhere.

When it comes to doing treatments Reiki is safe for children, the elderly, the very sick, for animals and for those in crisis.

Reiki is safe for all ages

Reiki during pregnancy can aid the health and wellbeing of both the parent and child, supporting the foetus' development and aiding childbirth (did you know that a foetus can pick up trauma in the womb?), whilst Reiki at the end of a person's life can ease their discomfort and aid their peaceful transitioning. For those with chronic or life limiting health issues, Reiki can provide an oasis of calm, whilst those that have received a recent mental or physical trauma benefit from Reiki to facilitate the healing process and return to health.

However, you don't have to be in a crisis to experience Reiki. I personally have also used my Reiki skills to improve my mental abilities, be more effective at work and maximise my athletic capacity! I've also helped others to be better parents, get over a breakup or divorce or deal with demanding circumstances.

Feeling connected to love and joy is not only our birthright, but I believe the purpose of our time here on earth. For many, discovering spirituality is the missing link in their life, that helps bring meaning and a way out of difficult experiences.
